NEW FISH ZILLA

In the Philippines, a fishermen's protest has the potential to create a big uproar. They reportedly dumped a number of large Janitor fishes at the office of the government’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) to show how big the problem has become. The fishes were extraordinarily big that radio commentators wondered if it hasn’t become a threat to humans, at this point.

Known to the rest of the world as a small Aquarium fish, radio reports indicated that Janitor fish as big as 2~3 meters and weighing 30 kilograms are now being caught in large quantities at the Laguna de Bay, a main source of livelihood for 28,000 fishing families. The radio reporter may have been mistaken and the accurate size may be 2~3 feet but still, that is quite alarming.

The Janitor Fish (Pterygoplichthys disjunctivusis) is by nature a voracious eater and rapidly grows. Now that its population has become alarming, it has become a major competitor for food against native fishes and has resulted to a rapid decline in fish catch.

Other things that make the Janitor Fish very distasteful include its propensity to cause water turbidity and cause extensive damages to fishing gear and aquaculture structures.

Hmmn.. Gotta contribute this new information to Wikipedia.
